A LITTLE MORE ON VLIEGER & VANDAM:
The Guardian Angel bags narrate of the increasing violence and crime in the media, objectifying our addiction to fear. The first series of Guardian Angel bags were made of second-hand handbags and wool felt embossed with distinct silhouettes of handguns and kitchen knives reminiscing of Hitchcock’s iconographic thriller Psycho. In 2002 they were an instant hit in the media and in 2005 the MoMA Museum of Modern Art in New York included a Guardian Angel bag in their exhibition ‘Safe, Design Takes On Risk’. In 2006 MoMA added a Guardian Angel bag to its permanent collection.

V&V developed a process for embossing three-dimensional shapes in leather. A traditional hat makers machine was transformed for the purpose of embossing the leather panels for their Guardian Angel series. Extreme precision and perfect timing is absolutely necessary to create the ultimate embossment. All embossed parts are handmade in Vlieger & Vandam’s workshop in the Netherlands. After several stages the leather panels are finally ready to be shipped to the bag manufacturers in Europe to finish the items. A unique but time-consuming process is part of most Vlieger & Vandam bags and accessories. It gives the collection its special V&V touch and makes the label stand out from any other label.
